Information on Indians in Istanbul and Turkey in Europe and EU....from GaramChai Europe

GaramChai Europe >> Turkey >> Istanbul

Istanbul (Turkish: Istanbul; historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see the other names of Istanbul) is the largest city and cultural and financial center of Turkey. It is the largest city proper and second largest metropolitan area in Europe, and the fourth largest city proper in the world. The city covers 27 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.

It extends both on the Europe (Thrace) and on the Asia (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 . - Wikipedia

It's surprisingly difficult to find good, authentic Indian cuisine in a city the size of sprawling Istanbul. However, this is definitely the place to come if you can't live without tandooris, biriyanis and a vast range of tasty but tongue-numbing curries. It's located in a restored Ottoman building on three beautifully renovated saffron-hued levels, just one street away from Sultanahmet's main drag, Divan Yolu. The cost of lunch and dinner at Dubb is surprisingly reasonable considering international cuisine in Istanbul typically equals pricey. - Yahoo

Will I get indian vegetables and provisions in Istanbul Turkey? Lots of the dried herbs ans spices can be found in Misircarsisi( (Spice Bazaar in Eminonu district) and most- not all-of the Indian veggies are also sold in open green markets or supermarkets, including vermicelli, Basmati rice, and all kinds of peppers. You wont be able to find canned coconut milk powder and coconut oil in here, though - Read more in Yahoo Answers

  • Whistlers in Istanbul: Istanbul had always been a mysterious and colorful place, from historic times to this day. I have so many fond & interesting memories, starting from meeting the president KR Narayanan to meeting varied personalities like Hon Najma Heptulla who complained of unseen mosquitoes which could bite her, when the windows of their new house were ceremoniously opened by the Consul General to get in the breeze from the famed Bosporus straits, into their living room. We had a small group of Indians living there in those times, all of 40 if I remember right, in a city teeming with 18 million people. When we met in each others houses, talk drifted to comparing the lifestyles of Indians and Turks, the similarities and differences, exchanging various anecdotes and of course yapping about colorful football heroes like Hakan Sukur and well endowed media stars such as Hulya Avsar and Sibel Can.
  • Istanbul's spirit of freedom : Constantinople, as this city was known for nearly 16 centuries until 1930 when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk renamed it, is part of modern India's historic memory. The fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453, we have been told, led to the European search for a new sea route to India, the arrival of Vascoda Gama and all that followed.
  • India's rich and famous party in Istanbul: When Indian industrialist Vikram Thapar's daughter Ayesha got divorced recently, it made headlines - all the way to tabloids in Turkey. The reason was that Ayesha had been married to a scion of the Yesil Group, one of the most prominent business houses in the Islamic republic. When the wedding had taken place about four years back, it had got another round of publicity in the Turkish media.
