GaramChai Europe >> Turkey

Due to its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition. A powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong historic, cultural and economic influence in the area between Europe in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance . More than 60 Indian companies have registered businesses in Turkey in the form of joint
ventures, trade and representative offices.

In an era of the `global Indian' when it is possible to find a strong Indian community presence almost anywhere in the world, it is surprising to find hardly any Indians in Turkey. Praveen Verma, the Indian Consul-General in Istanbul, who hosted a gala dinner at the swank Swisshotel Bosphorous to celebrate the Indian Republic Day on January 26, told Business Line that there are "hardly 100 Indian families comprising 250 people in the country. Most of them are professionals working in MNCs, but beyond that there is very little." . continued

Commercial activities between the two countries have increased tenfold in the last eight years and have reached $3 billion a year. However, we are not satisfied with the commercial volume between the two countries. We aim to increase this figure to a minimum of $10 billion in the coming five years. Ties between Turkey and India will further continue to grow thanks to improving economic relations

The two countries share common values including commitment to secularism and democratic principles. Indian economic progress and technological advancement have been instrumental in recent upsurge in interest towards India in Turkey. Bilateral trade was negligible till the eighties, when balance of trade used to be in Turkey's favour. Trade, especially India's exports, started to grow significantly in the nineties. In 2002, India's exports recorded 60% growth and reached $ 564 million in an overall trade of $ 634 million, surpassing the previous best of $ 437 million of 2000. Despite the recent growth, India's exports are currently around 1% of Turkey's global imports. News and Articles on Indians in Turkey

  • Turkey "stuck in the Awaraa days?" Even as far as business interest is concerned, the representation of Indian business houses in Istanbul is confined to Reliance Industries and Tata Motors, he says. "Reliance Industries has a representative office in Istanbul and Tata Motors is assembling buses in Turkey. Of course, they also sell Indica and it is quite a popular small car here," he added. . . . .When told that the perception about India came through as very positive in conversations I had with a variety of people in Istanbul, Verma agrees that the "perception is indeed positive but the problem is lack of information on both sides about each other, and we are constantly striving to correct that." . . . . He confirms that in recent times there has been a spurt in Indian tourists visiting Turkey and "we are going to have a road show in the first week of February on `Incredible India' to generate interest among Turkish people about the magic of India as a tourism destination."
  • Turkey - India Strategic Partnership: The Indian Imperatives: The end of the Cold War and the strategic compulsions in the post 9/11 era have erased away the strategic and political inhibitions which held back Turkey and India from moving towards a strategic partnership. Turbulence in their respective regions and extended neighborhoods have brought into focus the strategic imperative for regional powers like Turkey and India to contribute bilaterally and multi-laterally towards achievement of stability in these areas. . . . Historically and culturally, Turkey has been no stranger to India and vice-versa too. While these two factors do not predominate in forging strategic relationships, they do facilitate the discourse towards that end.
  • A Desi in Turkey: As an Indian it is incredibly easy to quickly feel at home in Turkey. The toasty, sunny -- but not too sweaty hot -- climate welcomes you. As does the beautiful landscape. And the dazzling, dancing cerulean blue Mediterranean. Even more welcoming is the special warmth of the Turkish people. Like Indians they are full of a friendly curiosity for the guests visiting their country. Mixed in is lots of sincere hospitality. They happily lack any stiff formality and have a wonderful chalta hai, relaxed attitude. Especially endearing is their tenderness for kids.
  • Retracing their groovy trip: In MacLean's sixth book, "Magic Bus: On the Hippie Trail From Istanbul to India," he recounts his eight-month journey along this epic route. The book strings together a series of vignettes from his trip that en masse form a well-rounded and insightful look into the region. MacLean's ardent eye for detail is lovely, as is the way he sets his more visually descriptive prose against the sturdier explanations of the names and places in his travels. "Magic Bus" meanders as much as the author did on his trip: There's an intended plan but it's open to serendipitous detours. The book's form reflects the content - and it works.
